Dine in the 509

Where to go? What to do? What keeps us in the 509?

1 note &

Hello! How do you do? And some fro-yo too!

Hey there bloggies. This is Mary, the so far missing third party of the crew of Dine in the 509! It’s nice to finally meet you :) Sorry I have been missing out so far, but I am finally here to introduce myself. I have been living in Spokane as I have attended Gonzaga University for the past three years, and I didn’t truly experience Spokane’s dining scene until I finally got off campus and explored Spokane. I am a Colorado native and I can definitely feel it’s food culture beating through my veins. Give me some homemade granola in a bowl of oatmeal and I am good to go :) But honestly, I have always been open to food. I am definitely not a picky eater and never was (honorary clean-plate club member!) Yet I have to mention, I have dappled in going vegetarian a few times in my life, and this has opened my eyes to healthy and wholesome eating.

I also studied abroad in Italy for four months with Molly, and the culinary flairs I bring back with me are simple. Real. Food. I appreciated dishes made from scratch, down to earth ingredients, and home-cooked meals. I have never felt more nourished then when I dined there. It may have to do to the greatly reduced amount of processed food, or the fact we had a “pensione mom” who fed us home-cooked lunches everyday. What I loved about Italy and what it gave me was the desire, so much stronger now, for real food: from the source, wholesome, and natural. Now that’s what I’m talking about! This is what I want to bring to the table: a girl who is looking to put real food into her body, a girl who may be a veggie reader’s dining friend in Spokane, and a girl who is ready to Dine in the 509.

So here I am with my first post! From here out, it’s just the three of us verses a whirwind of savory bites. Spokane truly has hidden gems, great dining locations, and edible adventures to be had. Well, I am here to start us off this blog-festo off right with…

Fro-Yo Earth

(Written by me and photography by Molly!)

Oh fro-yo, you and your nonfat, creamy, frozen goodness. You made your way to Spokane in a little place we want to highlight called Fro-Yo Earth. Fro-Yo Earth is a great and simple place to get some good and healthy frozen yogurt. You will rarely get a parking place in the small lot in front of the location on Division, so be prepared to park out back. It’s a great sight to see: a busy local place prospering!

When you first step into the small venue, you instantly feel like a little kid again: you get to fill your own cup! So many flavors! Fro-Yo Earth changes up their yogurt flavors often, so the next time you are in be prepared for a free taste session: they have the perfect little cups to sample all the flavors you wish. They will always have the original “tart” flavor that are infamous with frozen yogurt places. Once you settle down on a flavor, or flavors, fill your cup up! When Molly and I took a fro-yo gander, they had great flavors to choose from this time around. Their current flavors right now are: Luscious Lemon, Grapefruit Eurotart, Georgia Peach, Raspberry Pomegranate, Dolce De Leche, NSA Raspberry, Cable Car Chocolate, Alpine Vanilla and Cake Batter.

For those health minded, the fro-yo they serve is fat free, so no woes. And those who are dairy-wary, they also have a sherbert that they switch up often.

After you tickle your delights with flavors of the cold stuff, you move down the assembly to the toppings, which I believe Fro-Yo Earth does very well with. They have an arrangement of dry cereals to first select, followed by the good stuff! Fresh berries like strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, and blackberries are always available, as well as pineapple and other fruits. Then they have the decadent goodies: pieces of cheesecake, brownie bits, chocolate candies, gummy bears and more. End your bowl with drizzles of marshmellow cream, carmel, and chocolate, and then whipped cream if you so desire.

What is great about Fro-Yo Earth is that they charge you by weight, so you can control your budget and your portions. They also give you a discount for using cash.

You can also be as healthy as you want: a little bit of tart yogurt loaded with fresh fruit was my choice of the night, or you can treat yourself with delicious carmel yogurt, cheesecake bites, and chocolate sauce. The great thing is: It is up to you!

That is what is so great about Fro-Yo Earth. You make the choices. You choose how much you want. What I also like about it is the freshness of the toppings, the creaminess and variety of the yogurt, and the experience of building your own dessert.

So to escape the Spokane heat (when it likes to show up once and a while) eat a healthy dessert, and go trendy with a fro-yo. Visit Spokane’s own Fro Yo Earth. You won’t be dissapointed.

From me to you, dig in! -Mary
