Dine in the 509

Where to go? What to do? What keeps us in the 509?

Spokane Public Market

On Saturday morning, I drove over to Spokane Public Market (right behind Fro-yo Earth).  I had been hearing updates and keeping track of the opening day on their Twitter and Facebook, so I was really excited to finally see it up and running.  When I first walked in, I bought a dozen of local farm fresh eggs.  It was so nice talking to the daughter of the couple who owned the farm and see that she was passing on her knowledge and passion to her young daughter.  From there, I perused the other vendors and enjoyed A  LOT of delicious free samples.  I was looking down for a second and out of no where, this man offers me a free reusuable grocery bag! It was exactly what I needed because I forgot mine and I planned on buying plenty more items.  We got talking and I noticed that his badge said that he was the Market Manager.  He was such a great guy with such passion for this project.  We kept talking and he was telling more about the future of the market.  They are planning on expanding within the next few months and future plans include an industrial sized kitchen, stage, full time vendors, sinks for every vendor, cooking classes, and live music! I loved hearing about this movement here.  We are in a location with so many local resources within an hour or two hour drive that it is a a shame to not take advantage of it all.

I talked to almost every vendor in their just hearing about how their cupcake recipes were inspired by their grandmother’s baking or how they are brand new to Spokane and adjusting to a new pace of life.  I mention that because I got talking to someone who newly relocated to Spokane from Santa Cruz, CA, which is about a 45 minute drive towards the Pacific Ocean from my house.  It’s a funky little beach town with a lot of heart and countryside and it is much different from Spokane.  I am sure he will adjust to being in Spokane even though the ocean is not right there waiting for him!  All of the vendors are so passionate about their products and making this market be a success! I asked a lot of them for permission to take pictures and when I told them I was putting together a food blog, they were so grateful that I was doing my part to help spread the word.

Whether you are in the market for fresh scones (the strawberry ones are delicious), homemade candy, cupcakes, getting your knife sharpened, farm fresh eggs and meat, flavored popcorn, cherry juice, jewelry, honey, plants, or vegetables for tonight’s dinner, there is very little you won’t find at the market.

Spokane is getting some culture, ladies and gentlemen! Spokane is getting green! Spread the word and PLEASE check out Spokane Public Market! It is open on Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 10-6.

Let the pictures tell the story:
