Dine in the 509

Where to go? What to do? What keeps us in the 509?

Frank’s Diner

Hello diners of the 509!

Well, I have been a way for quite some time! But I am back with three great eateries from none other then the 509. My mom and younger brother flew out from Colorado into town to visit, for which all of you college students can agree, means free food.

And dine in the 509 we did! I had to show off the glories of Spokane to my little brother, who is looking at college and stopped by our corner of the world to visit Gonzaga University. What best way to win over a teenage boy then show him the good eats?

I will showcase a few great local spots we munched at over the weekend.

1) Frank’s Diner

What a Spokane classic. It has history, it has originality, and it has style. We stopped for a filling brunch on the way to picking cherries at Greenbluff, so we had to choose the north Spokane location. The restaurant itself is in fact a remodeled a coach car of a train that was a part of the Great Northern Railway Company. After the decline of railroad travel as a popular means of transportation, it was abandoned and then later discovered in the nineties with the word “retired” sketched on its side.

The diner car was restored and is now great for people who love history and just love good food. This is how Frank’s Diner came to be a great breakfast spot in north Spokane!

Frank’s Diner can be described as adorable. That’s how I see it! It is a smaller space because the restaurant is a remodeled train car, so be prepared for a small to long wait. Trust me, it is worth it. Frank’s have taken this to heart and has a gazebo-type pavilion right by the entrance with heaters to keep you warm in the cold, and shade to keep you cool from the sun, with lots of seating. Plus, they even provide a huge thermos of free hot coffee to keep you going. After you are seated, at the bar or in a booth, you can readily see the chef’s hard work.

Seated at the bar stools, my mom, brother and I had a first row seat to witness the magic of the kitchen. The chefs cook everything right there on large open stoves, and we watched the thousands of eggs scrambled, the hundreds of pancakes flipped, and the hash browns, well, hashed right in front of us.

The food is good at Frank’s. That is it, just plain good diner food. It is your typical American breakfast diner, but it has it’s own Inland Northwest flair such as blueberry muffin French toast. There are omelets, oatmeal’s, biscuits and gravy, chicken fried steak, and scrambles. If you want a filling brunch at a quaint location, look no further.

I dined on a veggie scramble, with a delicious side of hash browns and bottomless coffee. We were so starved by the time we made it to brunch, so I didn’t even manage to think about snapping a pre-meal picture. We couldn’t wait to dive in, but trust me, all of it was good food.

If you want to choose a local place for a good and real, go to Frank’s! It is definitely a Dine in the 509 must.

From me to you, dig in! –Mary
